NINETEEN

Nothing can be loved or hated unless it is first known. ~Leonardo Da Vinci

If only I had called Mama when Paul urged me to mend fences, it would have brought me back together with Harvey and Judy a lot sooner. I alternated between cursing myself for waiting so long and blessing Harvey for finding me. In my heart, I knew our reunion would have been impossible while Mama was alive. The mere mention of her name still made my stomach roll. Maybe it’s true that events are predestined. Like now—the puzzle of my life seems to have clicked back together, piece by piece.

With Michael out from under Darlene’s influence, I was glad PJ had the opportunity to know his grandfather. I’d never seen a shred of evidence that pointed to closeness between him and Darlene, so I must admit, I was intrigued by the fact that he had no compulsions about showing his obvious affection for Morris in front of friends. He made it clear he no longer gave a rat’s ass about what anyone thought, but I believe Darlene would faint dead away if she ever saw them together. Instead of looking like two fragments of cold flint, now his wonderful gray eyes sparkled with the joy of life.

Dad, as I’d agreed to call him, and Morris invited me to have a last breakfast with them before I returned to Seattle. Morris looked like he was ready to burst with amusement. “Jen, darling creature that you are, Uncle Morrie has a choice little tidbit for you. I know you’ll love this one.” He lowered his voice, indicating a deep, dark secret was about to be revealed.

“According to the insiders, poor, dear Darlene is stretched out on a shrink’s couch several times a week now. Apparently the pitiable creature is suffering from a tad of depression.” He fanned his face with one hand. “Too bad, don’t you think?” This was followed by a big belly laugh. “Michael doesn’t even mind having to pay for it, do you, dearest?”

Michael chuckled gaily, “Hell, no! Picturing that bitch stewing in her own brew is worth whatever it winds up costing. As long as PJ hasn’t gotten any of her rotten genes, we’re safe. Agreed?”
